Effects of Plurilingual Teaching on Grammatical Development in Early Foreign‐Language Learning

This article reports two intervention studies testing the effects of plurilingual teaching on grammatical development among primary-school students learning English as a foreign language (FL). In pre–posttest control-group design, more than 200 9–10-year old majority German and minority received FL (intervention group) or regular FL-only (control group). Study 1 acquisition wh-questions showed that systematic cross-linguistic comparisons with languages facilitate object questions. 2 passives, control groups both demonstrated comparable gains. We suggest has advantages when differs from target (Study 1) yet not phenomenon is across 2). neither study did learners show generalization to related phenomena. Finally, perform differently, which suggests suitable for all learners. These findings demonstrate facilitates by increasing learners’ awareness similarities differences.
